Safety Challenge:
Mr. C. is an 80 year old man residing with his wife in a retirement community near Chicago. He suffers from Parkinson’s disease and has beginning Alzheimer’s disease. He has recently had a series of falls and has trouble completing his Activities of Daily Living (ADL’S)
He needs help to get on his clothes and can no longer stand at the sink or in the shower. He is forgetful and is not safe to be home alone.
Safe at Home Solutions:
Safe at Home was contacted by Mr. C’s son. After two visits to the retirement community, Safe at Home recommended Mr. C obtain a shower seat, grab bars for the shower and on the wall next to the toilet, and a commode to place over the toilet. Safe at Home also assisted this family in obtaining these home modifications; some of which was covered by the family’s private long-term care insurance policy.
Continued Care Recommendations:
Safe at Home helped the family of Mr. C understand that home safety was a form of preventative care. As such, Safe at Home recommended that Mr. C have a caregiver for a portion of the day and helped to train the caregiver to utilize the safety measures recommended by Safe at Home.
Safe at Home also recommended occasional audits to ensure that the environment was providing the proper safety installations Mr. C required.
All in all, the safety installations recommended by Safe at Home served to not only make Mr. C’s environment safer but they also brought peace of mind to the family.
