Safe at Home provides you with the following home safety tips. These safety tips will serve to ensure that the home environment you or your loved ones reside in is as safe as possible. Check back soon for other safety tips.

Keep floors and walking areas free from clutter
Thick, plush carpeting and area rugs can make a room cozier; however it makes for very unsafe walking if you are using a cane, walker, or wheelchair. Instead, remove all area rugs and make sure the flooring is level. Also remove throw rugs near the door and in the bathrooms. It will be safer for you to navigate with your assistive devices or wheelchair.

Install lock and light timers
Do you ever forget to turn off the lights or forget to lock the doors? You can put your lights on a timer. That way they will go on and off automatically, saving yourself from needless worries. There are also devices available to remind you to lock your doors.

Invigorate your "Energy Bag"
Some days we are more tired than others, at times making us feel as if we might be ill as we are so short of energy. A good rule of thumb is for every hour of activity, we need to take an hour of rest. Rest does not imply sleeping; it can be sitting quietly reading the newspaper or watching a television show. If you think of all your energy for the day as being in a brown, paper bag, the only way to keep it full is with equal parts of activity and rest.
